Mission Statement
The Biohazard Oversight Advisory Committee (BOAC) shall consist of
representatives from University units which deal with biohazardous
materials and biohazard regulations on a routine basis. The BOAC shall
include, but not be limited to, representatives from academic units
involved in environmental and health-related fields, service units
involved in medical care, safety, and housekeeping, and physical plant
units.
The primary mission of the BOAC shall be to recommend University-wide
policy for dealing with biohazards. The BOAC shall fulfill this obligation
to the university at large by:
- Identifying biohazards in the university environment and assessing
relative risks to University personnel;
- Formulating reasonable biohazard policies and procedures to ensure
the health and safety of University personnel exposed to biohazards and
to ensure compliance with applicable government regulations to
biohazards;
- Transmitting biohazard policies and procedures to the University
community, with particular attention to those constituency groups which
are most affected;
- Recommending training equipment and aids to familiarize applicable
units with biohazards;
- Implementing a system of review and approval for biohazard policies
and procedures developed by individual units to ensure overall
uniformity and compliance with applicable University standards;
- Recommending reasonable sanctions for units not complying with
approved biohazard policy.
The BOAC shall make recommendations directly to the Center for
Environmental Health and Safety.
