The Center for Environmental
Health and Safety has the responsibility of assisting all
departments on the Carbondale campus in complying with
environmental rules and regulations. One difficulty we encounter
with the large number and type of regulations is keeping users
aware of said requirements. A compliance inspection self-audit
program has been developed to assist in determining your area's
needs. Please note, this program is not optional. Inspections are
mandated by Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA). This
inspection is used in complying with that requirement. This
program attempts to expand beyond IEPA requirements including all
of the major areas of compliance required.
Frequently Asked Questions
Regarding This Program
1. Where is this form located?
Forms are available
on-line and
in hardcopy format. If you need a hard copy form, please
contact the Center for Environmental
Health and Safety (CEHS) at
info@cehs.siu.edu
or 453-7180.
2. I found the form but where are the details that help
me complete it?
The
detailed instructions are an important component of the
inspection form. Be sure to read the instructions for a
particular item before completing it.
3. Is CEHS ultimately responsible for ensuring my
compliance? That's why they're here, right?
No, CEHS is only responsible for assisting in compliance.
Ultimately, each laboratory or department is responsible for
their own compliance. It is our responsibility to make the
information available and aid in it's implementation.
4. So what if I find something wrong during my
inspection?
If you find an area needing assistance during the inspection,
CEHS will assist in correcting it. We review all incoming
inspection reports and note areas which need help. We will make
a follow up inspection or contact us directly if it needs
immediate attention.
5. I see references about a departmental safety
representative (DSR). What is the DSR's role?
The departmental safety representative is someone within your
department who our office coordinates inspections, waste
pickups, compliance needs and other environmental health and
safety matters. They will ensure inspections are completed by
completing them for the department or assist you in there
completion if necessary. DSR's are typically appointed by the
department chair or director.
6. How do I know who my DSR is?
BERT Team Member in your area.
7. How often do I need to complete this form?
Currently, the form needs to be submitted on an annual basis
(once per calendar year).
