  Beautify Southern Illinois

CleanUp Campaign 2003    Story by Christine Perry

On September 6th, 2003, the Beautify Southern Illinois Campaign teamed up with other organizations for the Saluki Volunteer Day of Service. Over 130 students volunteered to help “beautify” the streets of Carbondale. This great Day of Service included; The Clean-up Campaign, Habitat for Humanity, and Main Street Plantings. A combined total of over 390 hours of service was donated.

The Clean-up Campaign had about 50 students volunteering; they focused on the SIUC campus area and areas surrounding the university. The day began at the SIUC Student Center where an introduction and safety briefing took place. Following the meeting the volunteers were split into small groups, each consisting of two student leaders. The student volunteer groups were able to cover a lot of needed clean-up ground including: Thompson Woods, Campus Lake, Piles Fort Creek, Fanar breezeway, the city parking lots near campus, the parking lot behind Stix and Hanger 9, and Route 51. At the end of this productive day of service Noble Roman’s Pizza provided pizza for everyone paid for by the Saluki Volunteer Corp.

Positive results came from this event for volunteers as well as the community. The community is a cleaner place and exemplifies the natural beauty of Southern Illinois. The Saluki Day of Service is one day in which students can get together and experience first hand the negative effects people and litter can have on such natural beauty. These volunteers also have the chance to be a part of the difference, by supporting these clean-up days and doing a simple task of picking up litter. One volunteer stated, “We were able to get the area cleaned and enjoy the benefits; it was fun and spiritually fulfilling.” It was such a great day and a great effort to help “beautify” the streets of Southern Illinois.

Thank you to the following groups who participated: English 291 class (our leaders), Zeta Phi Beta, Alpha Phi, Delta Psi Phi, Alpha Kappa, Alpha Phi Alpha, Circle K, Leadership Council, and any other groups not mentioned. We would also like to say thanks to all the student volunteers putting forth their time and effort for a good cause. Please do no forget to continue your dedication and efforts to beautifying Southern Illinois.
