Beautify Southern Illinois
|
The Leap Year Clear was a big success on February 28, 2004.
Approximately 85 people volunteered to pick up trash around campus and
the streets of Carbondale. Volunteers included members the members of
Alpha Phi Alpha, Beautify Southern Illinois Student Alliance, Delta Psi
Alpha, Delta Phi Mu, Delta Sigma Phi, Delta Zeta, Gamma Beta Phi,
N.A.A.C.P., National Association of Black Journalists, National
Communication Association Student Club, Phi Beta Lambda, Phi Mu Alpha
Sigma Lambda Beta, Sigma Lambda Gamma, Sigma Nu, and the Saluki football
team.
Vice-chancellor of Student Affairs Larry Dietz even came out to help
beautify our campus. He spoke before the cleanup began, and he stressed
how important an attractive, well-kept campus is for attracting new
students.

| With so many
volunteers, we were able to cover a lot of areas. These included the
bike path by Papa John’s, Pile’s Fork Creek, the Strip, the Downtown
Pavilion, Campus Lake, and Thompson Woods.

A crew
from WSIU was present for the cleanup. They were collecting footage for
a one-hour Earth Day special. The reporter interviewed Jennifer Maas,
vice-president of BSISA, and Scott Donovan, beautification director.

A reception was held in the Alumni Lounge at the Recreation Center
following the cleanup. Bill McMinn, who is director of the Rec Center,
was present to help hand out the door prizes, which included donations
from Mane Effects, 710 Bookstore, the Cleanup Campaign Fund of the SIU
Foundation, and European Tan. A huge thanks goes out to Papa John's for
providing the pizzas. They were a big hit with everyone.
