Waste Disposal

Biological Waste
Biological Waste collections are made once each week, on Wednesdays. Regulated Waste is liquid or semi-liquid blood or other potentially infectious materials; contaminated items that would release blood or other potentially infectious materials in a liquid or semi-liquid state if compressed; items that are caked with dried blood or other potentially infectious materials that are capable of releasing these materials during handling; contaminated sharps; and pathological and microbiological wastes containing blood or other potentially infectious materials. If you are unsure if your waste is considered regulated, please contact the Laboratory and Hazardous Waste Section of the Center for Environmental Health and Safety at biological@cehs.siu.edu or 618-453-7180.

To request a biological waste collection, please complete an on-line request form. If you do not have web access, you may call the Center for Environmental Health and Safety (CEHS) at 618-453-7180 to request a collection. Your waste will be collected in less than five working days from the date we receive notification.

Biological waste may also be treated to remove the biological hazard by individual departments. Please contact CEHS directly for more information about this program.

Chemical Waste
Chemical Waste collections are made within 3 working days.

To request a chemical waste collection, please complete an on-line request form. If you do not have web access, you may also complete a hard copy version of the form and send it to the Center for Environmental Health and Safety (CEHS) via campus mail for collection. Please be sure your containers contain appropriate labels before they are collected.

Please refer to the SIU Carbondale Chemical Waste Management Guide for further details or contact a representative in the Laboratory and Hazardous Waste Section of the Center for Environmental Health and Safety at chemical@cehs.siu.edu or 618-453-7180.

Radiological Waste
Radioactive waste is collected by the Radiation Safety Section of the Center for Environmental Health and Safety. Please refer to their webpages or contact the Radiation Safety officer at radcon@cehs.siu.edu or 618-453-7180.
