Kerry Cole 2007 SIUC Environmental Health & Safety Award Winner

On April 3, 2007, Cathy Hagler, Executive Director of Administration and Paul Restivo, Director of the Center for Environmental Health & Safety presented Kerry Cole, Business Manager II in the Office of the Provost & Vice Chancellor with the 2007 SIUC Environmental Health & Safety Award. CEHS accepts nominations (nominations end the 1st Monday of February) for an award to recognize those individuals or groups who have had a tremendously positive impact on safety and health on our campus.

Award recipient Kerry Cole, and Paul Restivo, Director of the Center for Environmental Health & Safety

Ms. Cole’s nomination stated in part:

“Kerry consistently evaluates various situations in Anthony hall and brings them to my attention in an effort to prevent accidents, making the building safe for other employees and visitors. She was instrumental in getting stair strips added to the east stairway after several people fell. She was also helpful in letting us know that the ADA doors weren’t working properly, which was creating a loss of utilities (and money) each time the doors opened and closed. Additionally, she brought to my attention a heating/cooling unit that wasn’t functioning properly which could have resulted in safety issues had in gone unattended.

Cathy Hagler stated: "Kerry is an effective advocate for safety in the workplace. While her job as Business Manager for the Office of the Provost is her first priority, she also feels a real responsibility to the overall University to ensure that safety is a priority for its students, staff and faculty. I appreciate her efforts to keep me informed."

In presenting Kerry with the 2007 award, Paul Restivo stated: “Kerry Cole’s commitment to improving safety and health conditions on our campus is an outstanding example of the positive impact one employee can have on a wide variety of important issues. Conscientious employees like Kerry really are the key to prompt corrective action of safety and health hazards and concerns. We at CEHS commend Kerry for her outstanding contribution to continually improving safety and health on our campus.”

Upon receiving the award and gift of a portfolio with pen, Ms. Cole commented:

“It is truly an honor to be nominated for this award. The safety of our students, staff, and visitors is extremely important for our Campus on many levels. I believe it is our duty to inform and make constructive recommendations when we become aware of potential safety issues. I sincerely appreciate this nomination and award. Thank you.”

Faculty, staff & students are encouraged to nominate deserving individuals or groups for the SIUC Environmental Health & Safety Award. Details and nomination form may be found at:
