Instructor Led Training

Biological

Bloodborne Pathogens
Objective: Given the SIU Occupational Exposure Control Plan and applicable bloodborne pathogen regulations, individuals potentially exposed to bloodborne pathogens will identify measure to be taken to reduce or eliminate their exposure.

Length of Training: 60 minutes
Training Description: This instructor-led classroom training complies with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's Bloodborne Pathogen Standard (1910.1030). Training format consists of classroom lecture, video and a short test.

Biological Waste Handling and Disposal
Objective: Develop skills needed to safely package and dispose of all biological waste.

Length of Training: 60 minutes
Training Description: This instructor-led classroom training includes all types of biological waste and both in-house and off-site disposal requirements. Training format consists of classroom lecture and hands-on demonstrations.

Chemical

Hazardous Waste
Objective: Given the SIU Chemical Waste Management Guide and applicable hazardous waste regulations, individuals at the Carbondale Campus will identify a waste as hazardous or not.

Length of Training: 50 minutes
Training Description: This instructor led classroom training will provide the skills necessary for SIU Carbondale waste generators to identify what waste in their department is considered hazardous. Additionally, other aspects of the Chemical Waste Management Guide will be covered including spill response and waste minimization.

Hazard Communication
Objective: Develop knowledge and skills necessary to work safely with hazardous chemicals

Length of Training: 45-50 minutes
Training Description: Classroom lecture, discussion and testing

Laboratory Chemical Safety and Disposal
Objective: Given a laboratory's Chemical Hygiene Plan and applicable laboratory standard regulations, individuals potentially exposed to hazardous chemicals will identify measure to be taken to reduce or eliminate their exposure.

Length of Training: 1 hour and 15 minutes
Training Description: This instructor led classroom training complies with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's Occupational Exposure to Hazardous Chemicals in Laboratories Standard (1910.1450). Training format consists of classroom lecture, video and a short test.

Asbestos Awareness
Objective: Develop an understanding of asbestos hazards and skills to recognize and avoid exposure to asbestos containing materials

Back Safety/Safe Lifting and Carrying
Objective: Develop knowledge and skills to safely lift and carry loads without injury to the back and other body systems

Confined Space Entry
Objective: Develop knowledge and skills needed to recognize, evaluate and safely enter and work in permit-required confined spaces

Emergency Actions/Disaster Preparedness
Objective: Develop knowledge and skills needed to construct facility plans and safely respond to emergencies or disasters.

Fall Protection
Objective: Develop knowledge and skills needed to work safely in elevated areas and use fall protection safety equipment

Forklift Safety
Objective: Develop knowledge and skills needed to safely operate and work around forklifts

Objective: Develop knowledge and skills needed to work safely with hand and power tools

Machine Guarding
Objective: Develop knowledge and skills needed to identify and avoid hazards of moving machinery and know the correct guarding necessary for protection

Office Safety / Ergonomics
Objective: Develop understanding of safe work practices and recognition of hazards necessary to perform safe and healthful work in the office environment

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Objective: Develop knowledge of when PPE is necessary, which to use, how to use and limitations of PPE

Portable Fire Extinguisher Usage
Objective: Develop knowledge and skills needed to effectively extinguish small fires

Respiratory Protection
Objective: Develop knowledge and skills needed to safely use respirators to protect against respiratory exposure to chemical vapors and dust and other particulates

Trenching and Shoring Safety
Objective: Develop knowledge and skills necessary to work safely in trench areas following OSHA regulations and departmental policies and procedures
